A Tripping Breaker Is Doing Its Job
It is worth saying plainly: when a breaker trips, the safety system worked. Something on that circuit drew more current than the wiring can safely carry, and the breaker cut power before the cable got hot enough to start a fire. The instinct to simply reset it and carry on is understandable, and it is also how circuits end up overheating inside walls.
What matters is why it tripped. An overloaded circuit with too many devices on one run needs load redistributed or a new dedicated circuit. A short circuit or ground fault means damaged wiring or a failing appliance and needs tracing. And breakers themselves wear out — after enough thermal cycles they begin tripping well below their rated load, which is the case in a surprising number of the calls we take.
We diagnose which of those you actually have. Sometimes the answer is a $49 diagnostic and a replacement breaker. Sometimes it is a new circuit. Either way you will know what you are paying for and why.

A breaker warm to the touch, or a panel cover that feels warm, means a connection is generating heat. Shut off the main and call.
Buzzing or Crackling
Audible noise from a breaker indicates arcing at the bus connection. This is an active fire risk, not a nuisance.

A breaker that trips the moment you reset it is reporting a dead short. Leave it off and have it traced.
It Will Not Trip At All
A breaker that never trips despite obvious overload has failed in the most dangerous way possible — the protection is simply gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
The most common answer is that the breaker itself has aged. Breakers are mechanical devices with a finite number of thermal cycles, and after fifteen or twenty years they can begin tripping below rated load. Other frequent causes are a failing appliance drawing more current as it degrades, or a shared neutral between two circuits. Diagnosis distinguishes these quickly.
No, and this is genuinely dangerous. The breaker is sized to protect the wire, not the appliance. Putting a 20-amp breaker on a circuit wired with 14-gauge cable rated for 15 amps means the wire can now overheat inside your wall without the breaker ever tripping. If a circuit needs more capacity, it needs new wiring, not a bigger breaker.
They protect against different hazards. GFCI detects current leaking to ground — the shock hazard — which is why it is required near water. AFCI detects the electrical signature of arcing, such as a nicked wire or a loose terminal, which is a fire hazard. Modern code requires both in the areas each applies to, and dual-function breakers provide both at once.
Where safe and where properly listed breakers are still available, yes. But for obsolete panels such as Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Challenger, we will be honest with you: fitting a new breaker into a panel with a documented failure history does not make it safe. In those cases we will recommend panel replacement and explain exactly why.
