This sewer project involved extensive repairs and replacement work on a shared 6-inch sewer line serving two homes. During an initial spot repair, our team discovered an approximately 1½-inch lip between existing sections of pipe. This created an obstruction where debris could collect and potentially contribute to future sewer backups. The remaining 6-inch concrete portion of the shared sewer line was then open-trenched and replaced with new 6-inch Schedule 35 PVC, with the neighboring home’s sewer connection properly reconnected.
For the main home, we installed a new 4-inch Schedule 35 sewer run, along with a separate new 4-inch Schedule 35 sewer run serving the rear ADU. The previous ADU connection used improperly installed 3-inch ABS piping with a 90-degree turn in the yard and an improper sanitary tee connection. This piping was removed and upgraded to properly sized sewer piping using Schedule 35 sewer pipe and Schedule 40 solid-core PVC where required by code.
All new sewer piping was installed with a minimum grade of ¼-inch per foot to promote proper drainage and flow. The piping was properly bedded in approved 5/8-minus gravel in accordance with Southwest Suburban Sewer District requirements. New cleanouts and cleanout boxes were also installed for both the main home and ADU, providing improved access for future sewer maintenance.
The completed work was inspected and approved before the excavation was backfilled and the yard was restored to the best of our abilities. A portion of the existing fence had to be removed to safely access the sewer line, and the customer is responsible for reinstalling the fence posts and fencing. The driveway was restored using 5/8-minus and 5/8-clean gravel. The newly installed sewer lines serving the main home and ADU, along with the replaced portion of the shared 6-inch sewer line, are covered by a 15-year warranty.
